For the reminder, last time was like this:

I'm not as convinced with "6g" as I was with the previous one (the bigger one above, "6d"). In 6g, the dragon is so high and big, though the drama is more there, I feel the narrative is more "silly", cuz the dragon would see them slip away and just follow, whereas in "6d", the "snicking run away through the night" felt more... hopeful and it made more sense that they fly away instead of "run away" by horses, so what I mean?

Maybe I'm putting the "logic of the narrative" above the needs of dramatic composition? 
Is it a bad thing (to put the narrative before the drama/composition) ?

    Ok I understand what you mean Démie(6d vs 6g). Both work in terms of storytelling. 6d (in previous post) is more static and has a big hole (top right). 6g is more dynamic and although it does have a dead space at top right it doesn't feel empty because of the space taken by heroine and griffin. I would try to have the dragon smaller and possibly flipped horizontaly so that it spits fire on the left side of the image instead of the right side. One last thing, and it's just a thought I'm realizing now: although you've made a quite few thumbnails so far for this particular image, none of them features a different posing of your main subject (heroine riding griffin), only different placement in the frame. The fact that you like 6d has a lot to do with the fact that we see more of the wings of griffin I think. All of that because you stuck with one pose that you really wanted to work and it's ok, but it can be very though to find your ideal shot if you are not considering changing the pose of your main subject anymore. I don't mind you go for 6d but try to find a way to bring in your main subject closer to the center. I will surely make a short demo with your work tursday if you don't mind. Good work!

Not sure I'll have much more time to push this before tomorrow's class (I have a parent thingy in the morning) so here's where I'm at now (still so much to do...), but I'm about satisfied with how it's going (I'm still missing some shadows that the Queen is casting on her griffin, some fur texture too, dragon is not finished, the King not even started (but he's going to be easy and kinda fast to do) (I'll probably lake some time to reach the deadline... I'm looking at my schedule and what's left... I might miss couple of hours, maybe a day... or two!?  Not panicking... not!

Trying new things. Here is where it was yesterday evening (dragon close to be done). A. I kept having the same comment about the background. At least half of the time, people saw the bushes at the line of horizon like clouds, sky nearly touching the castle.  So I gave it a try to change the time of day/night, to make it more obvious what's "sky" and what's "bushes and horizon line". Tried to improve the night atmospheric perspective at the same time (which is counter intuitive, cuz it's the opposite of day time). B. I was also told more than once that the distance between dragon (middle ground) and griffin (foreground) is really not obvious. Mostly because of the colors, so bright and sharp in the middle ground (as much, if not even more than foreground). There should be some sort of atmospheric perspective there too, but I'm not sure I to do this with this kind of scene. While talking with someone else, we thought I might ...

Project precisions

Hello everyone, just want to add something regarding Démie's question about your project. YES you have to stick with the main elements I want. But, for exemple, all themes can be exploited into something funny or in a lighter tone. Your style may be more suitable for comedy. About the Sea Beast theme, there is no indication that the beast is a menace. You could make it friendly and still have an epic adventure feel to the whole thing. Take your time to think about it till thursday. You can take 5-10 minutes during next class to draw your lineup. As I said, you still have a lot of freedom. Stick with me for the 8 weeks left and you can alter it anyway you like when this class is over. The goal here is to build a striking image. This is still Gothic Horror:
